Nintendo Skylanders Amiibo Are Getting Rereleased Jan. 9

As I have discussed before, I don’t try to cover every piece of Amiibo news that comes out, but since this news item took me by surprise and poses an interesting question for Amiibo collectors, I thought it was worth discussing.

Bowser Skylanders Amiibo Starter Pack

The Donkey Kong and Bowser Skylanders that were released a few months ago as Skylanders Starter Packs (which comes with everything you need to play the game and are more expensive than just standalone figures) are being re-released as solo figures for considerably cheaper than the Starter Packs.  Each pack comes with the character and their vehicle and they retail for $25 each.  This is quite expensive still, but since you’re getting two figures essentially for that price, it seems fair.  If you don’t already have these figures and you don’t buy them as part of a Starter Pack, their usefulness is pretty limited and that leads me to think Nintendo and Activision are releasing these in the hopes that Amiibo collectors will pick them up at the lower price point just to have them in their collection.

Donkey Kong and Bowser Skylanders Amiibo

I was skeptical of these crossover figures for a couple of reasons.  The first is that I cannot afford and do not want to get into another “Toys to Life” video game and if I did, it would not be Skylanders, and instead would probably be Lego Dimensions or Disney Infinity.  So that made buying a Starter Pack not appealing to me.  The other issue is that these figures are meant to fit into Skylanders and do not have a Nintendo feel.  I think the figure quality is at least different, if not inferior to Amiibo too.  With that said, the Skylanders definitely offer something completely different than Amiibo which is great and I could see many collectors picking up the standalone sets, especially if they really like Bowser or Donkey Kong.

What do you think of the Skylanders Amiibo?  Do they already have a place in your collection?  Are they worth the price to you?  Let us know in the comments section!

  1. Even though I love Bowser and Donkey Kong, I never really saw the appeal of them as Skylanders Amiibo either. They just seem like they don’t really fit into that world or something. If I saw them for really cheap I might pick them up, but otherwise I’ll just leave them be. I’m sure there are people out there who enjoy them though!

    • I think you described my feelings well 🙂 The style just doesn’t fit with the video games Donkey Kong and Bowser come from and even the paint job doesn’t look very Amiibo or Nintendo-like. That makes it easier to pass on these figures because they don’t feel like they are for Nintendo fans. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being a loyal reader of the site! 🙂

      • Yeah I saw them in store and looked them over and I wasn’t very impressed! I was kind of disappointed in them and couldn’t justify a purchase- I feel like my money was spent better elsewhere! And you are so welcome! I love your site and am still working my way through all of your entries when I can 🙂 You really do give great insight into all of these different types of figures and I love seeing what you have to say about them!

      • That is exactly how I felt and I definitely considered buying them when they first came out and never did. Thank you so much for the kind words and I appreciate that you’re taking the time read so much of my site! You’re the first person I’m aware of who has ever attempted to do that and I can’t tell you how flattered I am that you enjoy reading the articles here enough to try and read them all 😀

      • Aww, well you are very welcome! I just love how you chose to write about a unique sector of video gaming that is often underrated, which is collecting! It is fun to see all the different items you’ve reviewed. And I’m kind of like that anyway- once I find something I enjoy, I start from the beginning so I don’t miss anything! 🙂

      • Thank you again for the kind words! I started the site because nobody was focused on Nintendo figures exclusively and I hoped and thought that people would actually enjoy visiting and reading about collecting figures and thankfully people seem to like it so far. I look forward to seeing what you think of the articles as you have time to read them!
