New Legend of Zelda Amiibo and Yarn Poochi Coming!

With a Nintendo Direct today, it is not a huge surprise that new Amiibo managed to work their way into all of the new game announcements.  While World of Nintendo has been going pretty steady, Amiibo have been too quiet lately, so it is great to see Nintendo finally announce some more Amiibo even if it will be a while before they come out.

First up, we have new Zelda Amiibo!  I wrote a top Zelda Amiibo list a few months ago now and I commented at the time that it is odd how few Zelda Amiibo there are.  That is rapidly changing and this wave will celebrate Zelda’s 30th anniversary!  The Amiibo are spread across some of The Legend of Zelda’s biggest games including the original on NES, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker.  These four new Amiibo are tentatively scheduled to be released on December 2nd later this year and unfortunately we don’t know any pricing details as of yet.  It is hard to imagine they won’t be the standard Amiibo price but we’ll see as the release dates get closer.

The other piece of news really is a surprise.  Nintendo is making a Yarn Poochy Amiibo as he appeared in Yoshi’s Woolly World!  Poochy is a character I never really connected with in earlier Yoshi games for some reason but in Woolly World he was an awesome helper and really cute so I think this figures makes a ton of sense.  The Yarn Yoshi Amiibos have been pretty successful and a breath of fresh air so why not build off that further?  Gamestop currently has a preorder up for a bundle with the re-release of Yoshi’s Woolly World on Nintendo 3DS for $50.  Hopefully, Nintendo will make Yarn Poochy readily available as a standalone figure for those of us who already own the game on Wii U and don’t want it on 3DS.  They’ve done that pretty consistently in the past and there’s no reason to think they won’t do that here.

What are my thoughts and reactions to the news?  Well I’m thrilled to see new Amiibo and I think Nintendo’s Zelda Anniversary Amiibo celebrate the franchise effectively and offer us something new.  It is interesting they decided to do a retro Zelda because there are actually a couple variations of this that have been released with World of Nintendo.  I still think the new Amiibo looks great regardless.  Wind Waker Link is also pretty well covered in figure form (World of Nintendo and Nendoroid come to mind) but should be popular and I can’t wait for Ocarina of Time Link.  I love my Yarn Yoshi Amiibo and so Poochy is an easy buy for me.  He looks so adorable and the Yarn texture is awesome in person.  I’m so glad Nintendo is releasing a figure for an obscure character like this and diehard Nintendo fans will eat this up.  It sucks that we still have a long wait for new Amiibos (all the way until November) but Nintendo has announced more Amiibo to keep fans excited which is the most important thing.

What do you think about the new Amiibo?  Which ones are must-buys for you?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. You won’t believe how happy these Direct announcements made me! Poochy is ridiculously cute. I love the yarn Yoshi amiibo already, especially the large one. Poochy is all I wanted, and I’m glad they offered. I also think the Zelda ones look amazing. Pre-ordering as soon as I can and getting them day one!

  2. Me too! I think Nintendo gave Amiibo fans a much needed jolt of excitement today and the Poochy Amiibo is probably my most anticipated now. I agree that I will be there day one for almost all of these (except maybe the Wind Waker ones, I may pass on those two since I have or will be getting the Nendoroids). 🙂

    • While I’m old enough that I should have played and got into the original Zelda games, it wasn’t really until Ocarina of Time when I fell in love with the series so I am torn on getting the 8-bit one. I like the design but it doesn’t have a lot of meaning to me personally. I may end up skipping it as well but I’m pumped about the others too 🙂

  3. Hmm, if I was a Zelda fan I think I’d be more excited. But sadly I already bought the previous Smash Bros. Link, so I don’t really need another. Which is sad, because the Ocarina of Time Link looks MILES better by comparison.

    • I agree completely. I really like the Ocarina of Time Amiibo and it is probably my favorite of the group. Nintendo botched the Smash Brothers Link in my opinion. The pose looks weird as an actual figure and the “pee stand” really needs no explanation!

  4. I’m so stoked for these amiibo (and the rest of the Mario series ones). Poochie is absolutely adorable, and that Ocarina of Time Link looks SO much better than the Super Smash Bros Link amiibo. Awesome post!

    • Great minds think alike! Those are the two Amiibo I’m excited about too 🙂 Thank you for the kind words and for letting me know about this opportunity. I will send you an email in the near future to learn more about it. I’m definitely intrigued!

    • It was definitely feeling that way and overall, the health of Toys-to-Life, including Amiibo, is not looking nearly as good as it did a year or so ago. I’m most excited for Ocarina Link and my sense is that the two Amiibo you like best are the ones most other Nintendo fans are excited about too 🙂
