New Smash, Zelda, and Pikmin Amiibo Announced!

With a Nintendo Direct scheduled and only one small Amiibo release on the horizon, you kind of had to expect that there would be some Amiibo news to come out today and what we ended up with was a real onslaught of releases!  There is a lot of news to sort through so let’s talk about each announced release and I’ll share my thoughts on each one as well.

First up, in June we have more Zelda 30th Anniversary Amiibo coming.  If you follow the Amiibo Reddit, this was heavily rumored and probably not a huge surprise since the 30th Anniversary figures sold well and are hard to find in storesat the moment.  This time around we get Amiibo from Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword.

Zelda 30th Anniversary Amiibo

As for the figures themselves, I only like Majora’s Mask Link on an initial inspection.  They capture Link and that game’s unique artwork well.  The Skyward Sword Link is in a pose that a number of other figures (and a statue) have done already.  That isn’t new enough to make diehard collectors happy.  The Twilight Princess Link looks fine other than the weird pose he is in.  With a Twilight Princess Figma Link coming out, this Amiibo has some stiff competition.  All in all, these Amiibo don’t look to offer enough new stuff to stand out from other figure lines which is a bit of a shame but if you don’t already have figures from these games then they are quite a bit more exciting.

New Smash Brothers Amiibo 1

New Smash Brothers Amiibo 2

Next up we have not three but six new Amiibo for Smash Brothers!  Could this be why they took so long to come out?  Nintendo doing variants is quite a surprise and reminds me of what a lot of action figure companies do.  I really like how the Bayonetta Amiibo look and appreciate the dynamic poses.  While I prefer Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 (which is one of my all-time favorite games) both of his Amiibo also look great.  Corrin looks to continue the strong Fire Emblem Amiibo we’ve seen and I would probably take her over Alm and Celica if I had to choose.  We had to wait a long time for these Amiibo but they look to be worth it!

New Splatoon 2 Amiibo

In July we get even more Amiibo including Pikmin and Splatoon!  The Splatoon 2 Amiibo look like a serious upgrade from the earlier releases.  The dynamic poses and ink splashing really sets these apart from the previous release and will be popular with any Splatoon fan.  My favorite Amiibo out of all these might be the Pikmin one.  Pikmin has such limited merchandise and to be frank, the Olimar Amiibo is just alright so to get a cute one with so many Pikmin on it is just fantastic.  I think Pikmin fans will love this Amiibo and it is cool to see Nintendo make a diorama Amiibo like this.  This is an ambitious idea that I’d love to see more of!

New Pikmin Amiibo

Overall, there is something for everyone in the latest Amiibo releases.  While buying all of these figures will lighten your wallet, even the worst of these new figures still look pretty good and it should be a fun time to be a Nintendo collector this summer!  Those are just my thoughts though, what do you think of these new figures?  Are there any you have to have or any you’re thinking about passing on?  Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Words can’t describe how excited I am for all of these!! (Especially for Cloud x 2, and the new Zelda ones, haha). My only personal critique would be that I’d prefer Majora’s Mask Link to be holding the Zora mask since that was my favourite. I just had a thought that a Fierce Deity Link Amiibo would be awesome 🙂

    • I agree with you on the Fierce Deity Link. That would really be a nice surprise and appeal to fans of Majora’s Mask too. I feel like the Zoras always are forgotten in favor of the Gorons though I am guilty of preferring the Gorons too… It sounds like Nintendo did enough to keep both of us addicted for a while longer 🙂

  2. Pre-ordered most of them. 😉 Can’t wait for double Smash amiibo after all this time! Only thing that would have made this better is the Qbby amiibo, since Bye-Bye BoxBoy! did come out.

    • It is crazy to think that Japan is starting to amass a number of Amiibos that will never come out here in the US. I think the Box Boy is another one in that category. On the flip side, the rumored Binding of Isaac Amiibo would tilt that back in the U.S.’s favor a little bit because I can’t imagine that game is big in Japan. I’m glad to hear you have all of the Amiibo preordered and I will be looking forward to your thoughts on each one!

      • I might just import the BOXBOY amiibo at this point, haha. As for Binding of Isaac, I’d love to get one and I’m not even a big fan! I think Shovel Knight’s amiibo did come out in Japan, so maybe Binding of Isaac would do well there too. I would much prefer an Isaac amiibo from Golden Sun though. 😉

      • I think it is definitely worth importing now and it is pretty safe to assume that it is not coming to the US. Binding of Isaac is twisted but a lot of fun. I wish that I had more time to play it and unlock more stuff in it. I’ve put a 100 hours into it and there is still plenty more I could do if I had the time and desire to master it further. I just have a hard time seeing Japanese people get that game’s humor but what do I know 🙂 Golden Sun Amiibo? Now that would be a huge surprise haha! 🙂
